Examples of inorganic foods

What does the inorganic concept refer to? In the scientific field it is used when something does not present organic life , as is the case with minerals and water, the first being a fundamental element for the body’s electrolyte balance and the second for existence itself. In turn, they are also essential for the elaboration of the different types of tissues and to synthesize and/or release hormones, which are known as the chemical messengers of the body.

Minerals can be divided into 3 groups :

  • Macroelements: phosphorus, calcium, sodium, potassium and sulfur, among others.
  • Microelements: copper, iodine, iron and manganese, for example.
  • Trace elements: selenium, silicon, chromium, lithium and nickel, among others.

Water is one of the vital for the life of any living being and although it does not provide any type of energy, it does help the body work properly. A person can survive several weeks without eating certain foods but not without drinking water.


Manganese allows the regulation of cellular reactions , in addition to helping cognitive functions such as memory and lucidity. It also causes the appearance of sex hormones, both male and female. In the diet it is found in whole grains, nuts, lentils and spinach, among others.


Sodium is necessary for muscles and nerves to function properly, and it also contributes to its function in homeostasis , that is, the ability to maintain a stable internal condition. It also serves to regulate blood volume and the force with which blood hits the wall of the arteries on contraction. Shellfish, Swiss chard, pickles, ham, and cheese contain sodium.


Iron is necessary for the growth and development of the body and is found in small doses in the body for the formation of red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout the body , as well as other compounds of special relevance. In the diet it is found in meat, dehydrated fruit, eggs and dried legumes.


Potassium improves communication between the nerves of the muscles, breaks down and uses carbohydrates and controls the electrical activity of the heart. A diet rich in potassium helps decrease some of the detrimental effects of sodium  on blood pressure. Many foods bring it and are part of inorganic foods, for example, bananas, milk, nuts, fish and broccoli.


Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, which produce thyroxine (T 4 ) and triiodothyronine (T 3 ) in order to regulate metabolism.

In turn, it fulfills other functions such as improving mental agility , helping growth and burning fat that is not necessary. Clams, cod, milk, yogurt, rye bread, potatoes and fishbones contain iodine.
