Although it is important to highlight that not all diseases of the mouth are treated by the dentist. A dentist must have knowledge in different aspects of medicine such as physiology, anatomy, pharmacology and pathology. An oral disease can cause from local complications to very serious general complications.


The term stomatology comes from the Greek στόμα (stoma), which means mouth. It is one of the branches of health science that is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the stomatognathic system.

 In stomatology there is a branch known as dentistry, oral rehabilitation, orthodontics, dental prosthetics, preventive dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, forensic dentistry, cariology, odontogeriatrics, baby dentistry, oral radiology, dental materials research, sports dentistry, among others.

Difference between dentist and stomatologist

Depending on the country, both terms may or may not be synonymous.

  • For Spain, the stomatologist is a doctor and the dentist is not. That is to say, the dentist only studies the specialty dedicated to the study of teeth and the diseases that afflict them, plus some medical subjects, and obtains a degree in Dentistry.
  • A stomatologist studies the entire medical career and then performs a specialization in stomatology. That is to say, he has two titles, that of a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and that of a Medical Specialist in Stomatology.
