Difference between Cholesterol and Triglyceride?

It is common to hear the term cholesterol and triglycerides as the cause of cardiovascular problems such as arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure and strokes. These are values ​​that are always measured through annual blood tests or as regularly as indicated by a doctor. The difference between cholesterol and triglycerides is based on their chemical structure, since both are types of fats that are found in our arteries at certain levels.

What is Cholesterol?

It is a waxy substance, very greasy, that is found in all parts of our body. Our body needs certain levels of cholesterol to function at its best, however, when it oxidizes it can stick to the walls of our arteries. The cholesterol accumulated in the arteries is called plaques, these plaques can narrow the arteries until they become clogged.

High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. High cholesterol levels can be caused by being overweight, poor diet and family history. It can be decreased by eating fruits and vegetables.

What are Triglycerides?

It is a type of fat that is in the blood, in excess it can cause coronary artery disease. Your healthy levels are below 150, above 200 are considered high.

 High levels of triglycerides in the blood can be caused by:
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption.
  • High carbohydrate intake.
  • Genetic disorders.
  • Some medications.

They can be reduced with diet, exercise and medication.

Differences between cholesterol and triglycerides

  • Cholesterol can clog the arteries while triglycerides can cause coronary heart disease, especially in women.
  • High cholesterol can be caused by poor diet and family history, high triglycerides can be caused by lack of exercise, excess consumption of harmful substances, medications, inadequate diet and family history.
  • Triglycerides can be lowered with medication, cholesterol with a proper diet.
